October is national women's small business month

I interviewed several creatives about their talents and what drives them...this is Katie's story

My name is Katie Flack and I'm a local artist born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. I have always been drawn to the arts: painting, jewelry making, even sewing at times. Really, I am in love with all kinds of art.

Mandala art has been not only a beautiful art form, but also a very meditative therapy for me. The meticulous process of painting with dots is a practice in patience and I grow every day that I sit down at my art table.

I began Mandala art a few years ago, and I work with a variety of tools, from paint brushes to toothpicks. My medium is acrylic paint and I seal all my work using a satin varnish. I work primarily on rocks, but do use wood rounds and canvases as well.

"Believe in yourself. Always create from the heart, it shows when you do."

"What inspires your creative process?"

"Nature. Going for a walk and seeing art in flowers."

why did you start your creative business?

I started my creative business because I believe in my art. I believe life is more than the 9-to-5 job and I want to work with what time I have with some thing that I love and inspires me.

if you could give any advice about creating or owning a business, what would it be?

Believe in yourself. Don’t be afraid of failing learn from each rejection, ideas that didn’t work out and trust in yourself. Always create from the heart, it shows when you do.

what do you love about creating?

Creating my mandalas is a small piece of my heart It calms the soul and opens your heart

anything else you would like to share?

Painting Mandalas is a really special process for me, but beyond that I have collected rocks my entire life - so putting the two together was the perfect mix. I hope you enjoy it!
